Bringing democracy to US? I thought US was a democracy already. Granted, a bourgeois imperialist democracy but a democracy nonetheless.

The US "Big Stick" policy refers to us ensuring that Latin America is not colonized by external forces. We won't directly change anything in those countries (other than occasionally supporting revolutionary geurillas) but we still will protect them from Euro and Asian influence.

I voted Chavez "a good man." He is certainly a little d democratic; Chavez went through three separate election cycles, each one verified by independent organizations and the United Nations. I would greatly enjoy watching our own president squirm out of a federal recall initiative, but sadly we don't have one.

Under Chavez, Venezuela's economy has rebounded from years of neoliberali reforms which not only squandered oil revenue, but also exacerbated poverty in such a way even Thatcher would have to cry (remember: Thatcher's reforms left one in every three British children in poverty).

The right in Latin America, historically, resorts to military juntas when troubled by leftist movements. Thankfully Chavez sustained his seat thanks to the people.

The economy of Venezuela is based on oil, although efforts have been made to develop heavy industry, e.g. steel and aluminium, and revive the agricultural sector. From the 1950s to the beginning of the 1980s the Venezuelan economy was the strongest in South America. The continuous growth during that period attracted many immigrants. With the collapse of oil prices during the 1980s the economy contracted. As oil prices have increased in recent years, Venezuela's economy has strengthened, with GDP growing by about 10 percent a year.

it'S the oil prizes not his exelencies leadership.

In the 1950s, during Jimenez' dictatorship, Venezuela enjoyed remarkably high GDP growth, so that in the late 1950s Venezuela's real GDP per capita was close to West Germany's. However, the democracy established in 1958 has not brought First World status from an economic point of view: on the contrary, in some years GDP contracted.
