I'll dismiss the joke around this to adress the heroity of a man going to space.

Behind all that "first man in space thing" there are hundreds of workers who exctracted from land the raw materials to create the pieces of the rockets that were tested and developed. Then we get Sergei Korolyov and all the engineers that worked with him in the development of these rockets and all the engineers that worked designing and supervising the construction of all the machinery that was used for the extraction of the raw materials, for its transformation into new materials like steel, fuels etc and then the machinery used to assemble the rockets. Reaching the one that took the guy to space which of course followed the same kind of productive procedure.

Then there were the workers that fed the workers we talked about, those workers working at the fields, raising cattle, fishing etc. Then there were the workers that built the houses of all the workers above. There are those who built the urban infrastructure in the cities, etc...

And then there is this man who was a pilot who couldn't have been a pilot hadn't it been for all the workers behind the production of airplanes. This guy had to eat, dress himself, drink water and have shelter all this provided by workers...

In the end if this guy could set foot outside this planet it was thanks to all the workers who participated in the above processes. He got the luck to be chosen and the balls to do it. His skills were dependant partially on him and partially on others and the rest was entirely dependant on others.

So this heroic feat belongs as much to the guy that put some screws in the rocket as to Sergey Korolyov as to Yuriy Gagarin.
