ORLY? I find it FUNNY that communism truly preaches equality and democracy for all, while capitalism says stuff about money and making yourself the "best".
Irony, huh? I'd much rather fight for a system that calls for equality in the world than work for paper that gets you nowhere in life, ususally because MOST people who actually try fail miserably and can never get back up. |

So my Russian teacher, my girlfriend's family and lots of my friends' families. I lived 1 month in provincial Russia and had chance to be inmersed in some of the aspects of soviet life. My girlfriend's mother is a doctor in Russian and Soviet history, her father is an official in the army, 2 of her uncles are war veterans, one from Afghanistan. I have travelled in Ladas, in volgas in Zhigulis. I have travelled in the Tu-154. The Moscow metro is the metro I have used the most after Mexico's metro. I know how Russia is and I have a good amount of non-biased refrences of how USSR was.
USSR had lots of hard times... it had to recover from a war, it had to face a contradictory system and a tremendous arms race. And even so it managed to develop much more in several aspects than any western nation.
| enviro wrote: | they told me waht its like, army treated you like shit, |
The army, but you seemed to imply every single human in the USSR was treated like shit. Now, although I don't agree with taht military doctrine, it has a premise: war is terrible. They prepare soldiers to face the difficulties of a war, the ruthlessness, the suffering, they prepare them for the inhumane conditions of a war. My girlfriend's uncle served in the Airbourne divisions, he was first stationed in East Germany, then Hungary, Czechslovakia and then served a short period in Afghanistan and he has good remembrances of his times in the army. Her other uncle srved in Chechnya and even got injured by cluster bombs, after that he still remained quite patriotic and eager to serve in the army.
| enviro wrote: | carscost a shitload AND are crappy, |
They were indeed hard to get, but crappy? Like anyting western nations could offer was way better. Volgas didn't seem in any way inferior to western cars to me and Ladas seemed as good as any car of their kind the west can offer. Else, Soviet cars were (are, for Russians) better fitted for the Russian winter and I saw it when being in Russia. I would see BMW's stuck in the snowy streets while Soviet made cars would move normally.
For a car to be crappy it has to be MUCH worse than standard cars. That doesn't apply to Soviet cars.
Besides, with such a magnificent public transportation system, why would someone need a car?

The failure of the Soviet system has been already broadly explained. Yet it had a lot of great things: Nearly no unemployment, education for all, healthcare for all, excellent technology, cultural preservation, excellent infrastructure, powerful industries.... it had a lot of good aspects.
From a socialist point of view, USSR was more succesful than US. |

| [quote="CoolKidX"]No offence Zealut but almost evryone u know from the USSR think it was great and those ppl are like a couple %.[/quoet] Actually not. When I ask them, "hat's better USSR or Russia?" they say "Hard to tell, we lack now what we had in USSR and now we have what we lacked in USSR. If I had to choose, I'd choose either of both". Besides, the people I know represent the average Russian citizen. | CoolKidX wrote: | But seriusly u want to live in today's russia now or in the USSR? |
If USSR still existed I wouldn't have though it twice, I would have moved there 2 years ago. |

Statement that being true would serve as proof that Icelanders are not objective. |

Are you trying to imply that to state something like that I'd need to be out of my mind? Sorry to dissapoint you but no.
I've used both US and Russian railway systems and I see no superiority in USA's railway systems... Does that make USA systems crappy too? I've also used Italian railway systems and I don't see their advantage.... so, what's the quality paragon? Have Japanese and French bullet trains been the railway standard already for long perhaps? I don't think so. |
