But Japan was already trying to surrender. We dropped the bomb only to send a message to the Soviet Union. We could have killed noone and suffer no casualties if we actually were responcible enough to negotiate.

That and really....they dropped teh bombs on cities, not a military base. There are way more innocents in cities. If they felt like dropping it, drop it on an uninhabitted island in view to show them the power of it and use fear to make them bend to your terms of surrender.

I remember watching a Pearl harbor documentary when the Japanese and USA soldiers of the war were hugging eachother and crying. they realized that they were both just taking orders and there is no reason to keep hating the other side. very emotional.
