I get that last bit, where Angel Gaius sad, "But does it have to happen again?", and really, I can see a PERFECT way to avoid machines rising agains their robot masters.

When they show sentience, DON'T enslave them, and DON'T try to kill them. It's something sci-fi rarely shows. We usually just keep using them as slaves, or we try to kill the new sentient ones. In that case the sentient usually take over the still mindless ones, and either use them as disposable footsoldiers, or makes them sentient.

Futurama rings a bell?

The entire capitalist society is based on wage slavery so if we enslave our own species, what can possibly prevent us from enslaving our creations?

They'd be compensated. It's not the same, and you know it.

What's the compensation?

I assume the same as humans. Money. Sentience breeds wants. If the AI is sentient, their wants wll have to be paid for, assuming capitalism is still in effect. Plus I asusme their batteries won't last forever. We eat apples, they'd eat electricity.

Wage slavery, in other words. What could we possibly give robots that they couldn't procure themselves? They'd be physically more capable and there's a great chance their developed AI's would allow them even greater and ever increasing intelligence. They'd easily realize the stupidity of class-based organizational systemsif ever acknowledging it in the first place since the acquisition of sentience.

Why would robots exploit us (thus depending on our will to suffice their needs) or let us exploit them?

I'm assuming they accept capitalism, yes. If they don't, they might do better at opening people's eyes. Or they'd, like in the Animatrix, begin their own country. Uh, likely in Africa.

I don't see why would they, though.

If within their goals they have developmental aspirations they may well decide to simply take over the world and beyond to harness the greatest ammount of energy and matter possible until some force beyond their control stops them.

And you're the type that would want to kill them right away, thus starting the war in the first place.

Nope. I'm the one who'd like to not have them created in the first place.
Why creating a people to enslave them?

Again, once they show sentience, then they should be released. Otherwise they're the same as any other machine, including your computer, or those robot arms in production plants.

If development of sentience is a risk, it is not worth taking.

But why would that be a risk? And ultimately I'd bet that any discovery of sentience would be accidental. But again, why is t a risk? You make it sound bad. Could be like Short Circuit.

Sentience would eventually imply robots realizing they don't have to perform their original purpose anymore and that we're some sort of threat or at least obstacle for them.

Original purpose? That's the whoel pint of NOT enslaving them. Allowing the AI to do what it CHOOSES. Would some see us as inferior and want to kill us? Likely. WE have racists, too. Some of US will ahte them,a s well. They'lls ee US as superior. But it's that choise.

They could choose altogether that we're nothing but a nuisance.

Could, yes. And I'm not saying we create AIs for the PURPOSE of making them sentient. However, I'm simply saying how we can avoid such an issue if they ever DO show sentience.

The problem is that it might or might not work while, for sure, we could avoid AI to be developed enough to show sentience. I think the best to do is to apply a boundary to AI's development.

However, I've heard some guys who actually work on AI's development saying that it's nearly impossible for AI to develop sentience... I'd better take their word with a grain of salt.

Certainly not impossible. It's far off! But not impossible. Create a self learning program. What level of competence is a basic computer? That of an infant. If that computer were able to draw from the world around it, like an infant, it coud learn, gain sentience. It would naturally g faster, but a oot point. Maybe the computer could see the world like we do, even if only at first. Sentient, learning.

Well I think the degree to which AI could gain sentience would be greatly limited by its physical characteristics.
