| Salvador Allende was the democratically elected Socialist president in Chile in 1966. A few years after his election he was deposed by a US-backed coup lead by the fascist Augusto Pinochet. Allende's suicide followed Pinochet's siege of the presidential palace. He is remembered for his socialist reforms which in addition to improving Chile's living standard, sparked industrial growth, an increase in Chile's GDP and a staggering drop in unemployment (34.9% to 3.8%). I believe Allende deserves a place in the Monument to Heroes. | |

| oh know i know the true story, he increased inflation by 508% and that isn´t good. he did rais the gpd at first but later the inflation went boom and the real gpd dropped significantly. | |

| While that is true, the inflation and other economic problems under Allende's were due largely due to "sanctions" and sabatoge by the United States government in the latter part of his term (1970-1972).
Also, the inflation rate (while still bad!) was in fact 140% not 508%. | |

He receive a HUGE sabotage from CIA Anyway inflation was not increased that huge number!!! where are you getting those numbers??? from the page of a fascist??? Salvador Allende was democratically elected by chilean people, he died protecting his people, and he paid with his life... his reforms make Chile a big country... he is still the most popular figure in Chile... and his name is respected around Latin America as well as Ché Guevara... he was a martyr!!! | |
