May Day 2008!

Let's celebrate and demonstrate!

I heard about this, i would like more info on it

May day happens each year on the 1st of May. It's a protest on behalf of all immigrants. Usually it's a bunch of Mexicans and socialists that show up, although you'll see your sprinkling of lifestylists (hippies) here and there. It's a demonstration for immigrants rights. Usually there is a march followed by a large demonstration in some large public area, like a park or something. Unfortunately, i can't provide any video links, but if you go to youtube, look for a ten minute video by TheGameJew (or something) called ~ immigrant rights demonstration (...or something). I did find this, though. It's an article on the LAPD's fine police work last year in Macarthur park. It's also got some footage within the article.

I think the day started as a workers holiday, or something, but in america it's become an immigrants thing more than anything for workers (though every one of the immigrants that shows is a worker).

Mayday started in USA when AFL had the first general strike in America's history. It's the international proletariat day the workers strike, demonstrate, and fight back. Celebration in the US subsided during the cold war because of a myth that it was a Soviet holiday. Three years ago, massive demonstrations in the US led by immigrants and their families and supporters demanding better treatment, just like the first Mayday helped to revive it as a worker's holiday and this year it was celebrated around the world by workers in the biggest international demonstration in years. I'm disappointed in you.

Thanks for the background, but get over it. You make it sound like every socialist should know that, even though it's just one day of the year. We're involved in the struggle every day, so what's one day? And i don't see much evidence that it's been revived as a workers holiday here in america.

Was that the one where someone threw a molotov cocktail into a group of cops, and the cops just ended up mowing down crowds of civilians protesting? If so, that was some fucked up business.

first of may and jesus goes to heaven day for the first time for 90 years.

yeah someone did and the cops did open fire, but the day before that they also beat four anarchists to death.
eventually eight anarchist were tried and obviously convicted.
4 were hanged, 1 commited suicide the day before exacution, and 3 were eventully aquitted.
i did a monster report on the haymarket riots.

Every socialist, communist, syndicalist, anarchist, and trade unionist should know that, its the most important day of the year.
