| We must polish the Polish furniture. He could lead if he would get the lead out. The farm was used to produce produce. The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse. The soldier decided to desert in the desert. This was a good time to present the present. A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum. When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes. I did not object to the object. The insurance was invalid for the invalid. The bandage was wound around the wound. There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row. They were too close to the door to close it. The buck does funny things when the does are present. They sent a sewer down to stitch the tear in the sewer line. To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow. The wind was too strong to wind the sail. After a number of injections my jaw got number. Upon seeing the tear in my clothes I shed a tear. I had to subject the subject to a series of tests. How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend? I read it once and will read it again I learned much from this learned treatise. I was content to note the content of the message. The Blessed Virgin blessed her. Blessed her richly. It’s a bit wicked to over-trim a short wicked candle. I incline toward bypassing the incline. English can actually be a really hard language to learn | |

Because English is the illegitimate offspring of Anglo-Saxon, Frankish, Latin, and Greek. German is simply German, whereas English is semi-Germanic with Latin and Greek thrown in at random places. I need to learn another language. I know some Latin, but no one speaks that anymore... O Scelesti!

| My point was that not too many speak it. Even those who learn it usually only know how to read and translate it.
Also:
Church Latin is different than Latin. Over the past millennium, the Catholic church has added and changed a bunch of shit!

| English is hard. I'm from the USA and after learning French and Spanish, it's very different.
English is a collection of more than just a few languages though; we've bastardized many words to fit into English, including many French, German and Spanish words. It's Germanic based with some Romance languages thrown in.
However, we have many in the US that have their own forms of language. Creole, Gullah just to name a couple. Those have strong French ties and nothing like French/English at all. Creole has some spanish ties as well.
Knowing English doesn't mean you can understand those though. It took me years to understand spoken Gullah and I still have problems reading it, even though I have YEARS of French under my belt.
To English speakers, it's just straight and everything else is backwards. To everyone else, we're the ones that are backwards. Rio Grande (river big) is to us Big River (backwards!) Same with french, you have to think backwards.
Everyone I know who has been learning English all complain about it. The verbage is difficult. Are/Is We are, you are, he is, she is, it is, etc. No different from aller really but something gets lost in the translation I guess.

| My first language is french and I would say that english was quite easy for me to learn. Of course I make mistakes sometimes but it took me less than 4 years being able to understand and speak it quite fluently. French Is much more harder than English because there's genders, and every verb is congugated differently. In english, there are only few irregular verbs but in french I would say that 40% don't follow the usual rule of different groups because each group of verb is divided in other cathegories. Also I know many (like a loooot) of people that are still unable to speak and also write french correctly because it's too complicated!! I'm in the rare who only do a few mistakes sometime, but nothing important. Many don't know how to conjugate past participle with verb to have (and somtimes to be) and I know many that have big difficulties. And they have been speaking french their whole life!! - Quote :

Rio Grande (river big) is to us Big River (backwards!) Same with french, you have to think backwards. hahahahahaha that's so true Kismet!! But sometimes spanis sounds backward to me (adjectives) because i would say "grande rivièere" for "big river". But some other times the adjective is after the noun ^^ so you both sometimes sound backward to me hahaha

Learning a new language is easier for children. As an adult or in your later teens, a new language is much more difficult. Rosetta Stone! :p I haven't tried that method yet, but I've considered it; not for English, I speak that quite well, but more for a couple of other languages. My french isn't bad, more written than spoken, but I can get along passably in France

If you learned it by the time you were eight then of course you don't think it's a hard language. It's much easier to learn these sorts of things in such early stages of development. I am nowhere near fluent in any language other than English but acknowledge that it is a hard language for many people (and why that is, to a certain extent).
