Like in some states, party's don't even start a campaign there 'cause the final states only matter really(like the 2008 election only Florida and some other states really counted).

When Greece had democrasy only statesmen and other high positions could vote.

Its like that in USA, only some people vote, and there it is not a democrasy 'cause the majorty dosn't even has to say something, evry vote should be counting.

Well that's kinda true, a country where the victory is mostly decided by some ignorant undecided people....

The latter one, in that most "democracies" are closer to "oligarchies" than anything else. I mean, sure, you vote for the guys. But no matter who you choose, it's either one rich elitist or another rich elitist.

"Demos" = People

"Demos" doesn't mean "people" as "human being", but "people" as a conglomeration of individuals.

"Kratos" = power.

"The power of the people". That is, where the people rule, not where humans rule. What you're refering to is to the yet stupid and if plausible horrible concept of "antropocracy" in which there would be a possibility that humanity was ruled by another species. But that is absolutely irrelevant to the arguement.

You're just misunderstanding horribly the meaning of "democracy".

Democracy is a system in which all the members of the society rule.

De facto we have plutocratic oligarchies disguised under the mask of "democracy".

So did you just say that the reptilian people vote?

Seriously, saying people and not human beings, lined you right up for that.

Asfor it being either one rich guy or another, many more run. They just don't have the funds to run their ads. The RICH guys do. It's unfair, , yes, but that's where the voting SYSTEM comes into play, exactly how it's done. Like America's sucks. Canada, I think, is one vote per person, none of this electoral vote thing. Also, try, I think it's called trickle dwn voting. On your card you vote for who you'd want to win MOST, then down that list. Thus the lesser known candidates have a MUCH higher chance of winning.

I think I was clear there.

The USA are a democracy that's for sure. That not everyone uses his right to vote is unpleasant but the right not to vote has to be respected too.
I guess what you're referring to is the federalist "winner takes it all" system the USA are practicing. I am not a friend of this system either and I presume that the people of the USA are ready for a more direct form of democracy, where every vote counts. I bet this would also raise the percentage of voters there.

What's your understanding of "democracy"?

Sorry CK, but i think there are much more significant examples to show that the US is not a democracy.

Quote :
When Greece had democrasy only statesmen and other high positions could vote.

Then "democracy", as they used it, was mere lip service, don't you think?

Also, a comparison...

BC wrote:
...just take a short, yet instructive, look at the people who make policy here [in the US]. GE has a board meeting, where only high members of the company (large share-holders, execs, etc.) are invited to take part. They can make and enact policies that will affect many thousands of people, yet the people affected are not even allowed to view the proceedings, let alone partake effectively in the making of policies that are to significantly influence their lives. This is just one example among many (sooo many) that sheds some light on "democracy" in a capitalist society.

Sounds like Greece to me.

Going to a voting booth once every four years to check a box for which clown you want to make decisions on your behalf, without your council at all? That's a miserly attempt at democracy, at best. I'll admit that the US has the best capacity, i think, for functioning democracy, but the people don't care to use it, as they're kept quite subdued by popular media, and indoctrination.

We have an indirect democracy, as opposed to a direct democracy. Our founding fathers realized something: The average voter is fucking retarded. They put a buffer, called the Electorate, between the voter and the decision making. The voters elect leaders, but not really, they're voting through an electorate, the electorate elects leaders, and the leaders vote for policy change and creation.

So it's a democracy, just a slow as hell one. It could do with some improving but it's not the worst.

Being that there's an unhealthy gap between public opinion and policy in this country, i wouldn't be so quick to call this country a democracy.

Besides, even if i concede that electing political leaders is democratic, at all, that's still a pathetic representation of what democracy should look like.

And the average voter is only "fucking retarded" because there's no effort towards edumacating him. Historical amnesia and political ignorance is the status quo of the current school system.

In other words a simple facade.

Typical elitist thought. When this idea tries to manifest in socialism it's called "vanguardism".

Black_Cross already pointed out an important issue.

I'd sum to that the fact that most people are too busy working their ass off so those they work for can get rich while they survive at least. Under such conditions it quite hard for people to think on subjects such as the legitimacy of this whole economic system, history or politics.

"Break your backs working for us while we make all the important decisions. Don't forget to keep stupid!"

Very democratic indeed.
