Does this surprise anyone? Or furthermore change their view of Lincoln? A rarely acknowledged bit of history isn't spoken of in public schools: Marx wrote a latter to Lincoln and congratulated him on issuing the Emancipation Proclamation. Marx didn't have any misconceptions about Lincoln being a champion for the working class, but he certainly recognized the progressive nature of such an act. Marx organized boycotts against "slave cotton" in Britain and accurately predicted the conclusion of America's Civil War. At a time when most of Europe was rooting for the South to win, no less. | |
