holocaust was pointless. hitler was too extreme. but it was needed at the time to help germany and the places surrounding germany.

USSR had capitalism. Some like to use the term "degenerated workers state" or the "deformed workers state" but that State ran on capitalism and instead of profiting it was used mainly in non-profitable activities which eventually brought down USSR.

Yet, that USSR capitalism existed within a socio-cultural framework inmensely superior to that of any free-market country and in an inmensely powerful industrial framework.

USSR had much more dignity than nowadays Russia, had more cultural, social, military, educational and industrial integrity not only than Russia but than most free-market capitalist economies, in some aspects more than any free-market economy.

And, from a socialist perspective, it was already a step forward towards communism being an excellent platform for reformation to a truly communist system.
